What
As the images in our
introduction illustrate, 3911 is a solid brick building with all floors of
reinforced poured concrete. Floor to ceiling height is 16 feet on the
top two levels and 12 feet on the ground level. Each of the three floors measures 10,000 square
feet, totaling 30,000 square feet. Currently each floor has open space containing unlimited opportunities for space usage.
Washington DC based artist, Michael
Anthony Brown and
Baltimore based, cultural activist vernard r gray have teamed together
to organize the purchase and development of this facility. We began this
journey early July and one month later, on August 17th, entered into a purchase agreement with the
building's owner, Verizon Maryland, Inc. with a closing
date of October 16th.
On Thursday, December 10, 2009 we purchased
the building. We are assessing the redevelopment costs We are raising
fund for redevelopment through CA-FAM III, Inc, a non-profit, tax-exempt, education
corporation, founded & incorporated in the District of Columbia and
registered in the State of Maryland.
Envisioning the possibilities, we have discussed a plethora of ideas
ranging from both visual and the performing arts, to holistic wellness,
new media & sustainable technologies in a building that we plan to
refurbish in an effort to minimize it's impact on the environment and
serving as an example of the possibilities of green development in an
urban setting.
There are many steps that will inform the refurbishing
process. First the building, itself, will inform us of its possibilities
and limitations, second a planning process, facilitated by space design
specialists, informed by the building's stakeholders - neighbors in
surrounding communities, artists, potential occupants, government
officials, funders and other interested supporters will determined how
the building will be designed with specific activities in mind. We are
exploring various approaches to financing the redevelopment of the
building and are open to all suggestions. |
